23rd December 2007 Apricot season is well under way in the orchard district of Mypolonga! The annual summer season of picking and cutting 'cots' for the dried fruit industry has arrived. Many of the growers are reporting reasonable crops and large fruit size compared to recent years. Season so far has gotten off to a wet start with just under 25mm of rain falling during the day on Friday 21st Dec. ![]() |

Although the rain may be
welcome to most, this can't be said for most of the apricot
growers. With the rain brings extra work and the potential for downgrading or the loss of fruit. Rain can cause the fruit to split as seen by the apricots in the pictures to the left. This allow easy access for pests and diseases to spread and ruin the fruit. The splitting of the fruit also prevent it from being sold to the fresh fruit market. The apricots drying in the sun will generally tolerate 2-3mm of rain before they need to be picked up, re-sulphured then laid back in the sun again to continue drying. A big task when some growers might have several hundred trays of apricots that need to re-sulphured! |
