Olive Season Started

In what is a relatively new industry to Mypolonga, the annual olive harvesting and pressing season has started.

The first of the olive trees to be planted in the Mypolonga area occurred around 1996 with the first commercial production of oil beginning in 2001.

The olive varieties used to make Augusto Extra Virgin Olive Oil, which is pressed on the property of Rio Vista Olives, Mypolonga, include:

Frantoio (early pick green/black olives, a green oil with a strong fruity flavour)

Nevadillo (late pick black olive giving a lighter, nuttier flavour)

The result is Augusto Extra Virgin Olive Oil being judged Best of Show at the 2001 SA Olives Awards and following on in 2002 with a Gold Medal at the Australian Olives Association Awards.

Rio Vista Olives has continued to win medals in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007.

Work begins on next stage of Revegetation

Next stage of the revegetation of the old quarry at Mypolonga has started with Mr John Smith (pictured) beginning the necessary earthworks at the site.

Mr Smith, a veteran in the the revegetation of the area, has been heavily involved with the past plantings dating back to the year 2000 when the first of the trees were planted by the school children of the Mypolonga Primary School and in conjunction with the local Landcare group.

The trees and shrubs that will be planted are all native to the local area and this year will be supplied by SA Water.

Once the site has been prepared and drippers have been installed, it is again planned that the school children will play a part in their planting.

Mypolonga’s Heat Wave comes to an end!

A fortnight of sweltering heat finally came to an end on the 18th March

Although Mypolonga never experienced 15 days straight of 35 degrees or higher due to a typical Mypolonga "sea breeze" from the lakes on the 11th March, we did experience seven days above 40 degrees during the same period when Adelaide only had three days.

New irrigation pumps installed!

Due to the falling river level, the Central Irrigation Trust (CIT) has had to install three new submersible pumps to lift water to the main pumps.

CIT supplies water to the local irrigation district of Mypolonga as well as the new potable water filtration plant.
